The First Train

Located on the north shore of the Chadakoin River at South Main Street

The tracks crossed Main Street at ground level, now an overhead crossing of Conrail. The coming of that first train was a gala occasion in this little wilderness village and the Jamestown Journal (issues of August 23 and 31, 1860) and the Chautauqua Democrat announced its arrival in blazing headlines, while a local band played "Ain’t I Glad To Get Out Of The Wilderness".

The railroad was a vital factor in the development of Jamestown’s industries.
