Peter Carlo (center), of Jamestown, recently donated a 6' x 8' flag to the City of Jamestown. Accepting the gift are City Council President Greg Rabb (left) and Mayor Sam Teresi (right). Carlo said the gift is his way, as a Korean War Veteran, to give back to the city he loves. He believes in raising more awareness about what the flag stands for and remembering those who have fought to protect it. Carlo was also recently featured in a Post Journal article. The Post-Journal (Dec. 11, 2011)
Peter Carlo, an area Korean War veteran, recently presented three American flags to Mike McElrath, Jamestown High School principal; Phil Cammarata, Persell Middle School principal; and Walt Samick, Fletcher Elementary School principal.
Carlo has given numerous American flags to local schools over the years, including Jefferson Middle School, Lincoln Elementary School and Washington Middle School. The three flags have all flown over the White House in Washington, D.C.
"I believe in America. I love Jamestown and the people in this city. As a veteran, I feel that I should give something back to the city I love and I thought presenting American flags local schools was an appropriate gesture," Carlo said. "I love the kids and wanted to give back to them in some way too."
Carlo has been actively involved in the community in numerous ways throughout the years including cubmaster for the Boy Scouts, playing Santa Claus for 20 years, past commander for the Disabled Veterans Chapter 47, member of AMVETS and the Jamestown American Legion, and participating in the Jamestown Memorial Day Parade.
"We are very appreciative of Mr. Carlo's generous donation," said the three principals. "We will proudly fly them at our schools."
