As part of a community helpers unit, the Mayor of Jamestown, Samuel Teresi, came to visit the Dragonfly classroom at the Heritage House Childcare and Learning Center. During this classroom unit, children learn about jobs throughout the community and how they impact the community and our lives. Mayor Teresi read the book, "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss to the children. Mayor Teresi explained that this was the first book he was able to read by himself as a child. The children learned the moral of the story to be "Don't judge something until you try it." The children then were able to ask questions about the Mayor and his job. The Mayor concluded his presentation by encouraging the children to continue learning and thank their teachers for being so nice and teaching them.
"Having visitors in the classroom from the community really helps the children get a hands on learning experience. It's easy to read about jobs or community helpers in books, but having them come to my classroom makes learning and their jobs an immediate reality for the children," says Amanda Rhoney, Dragonfly Head Teacher.
