What is STAR?
STAR is New York’s School Tax Relief Program that provides a partial exemption from school property taxes. All New Yorkers who own and live in their one, two, or three family home, condominium, cooperative apartment, manufactured home, or farm dwelling are eligible for a STAR exemption on their primary residence.
The basic STAR exemption is available for owner occupied, primary residences regardless of age but a household income less than $500,000 on the previous year’s tax return. It will exempt the first $30,000 of assessed value.
The enhanced STAR exemption is available for owner occupied, primary residences of senior citizens who are turning 65 during the next calendar year with household incomes not exceeding the statewide standard ($86,000 for 2016). This will exempt the first $65,300 of assessed value.
How to Apply
Anyone currently receiving an exemption on a home you purchased prior to March 1st of 2015:
– Basic exemptions generally do not need to re-apply unless New York State requires that you do so, however, you would receive correspondence directly from them if necessary.
– Enhanced exemptions will receive a renewal application in the fall of each year and you must re-prove income and re-apply with this office in order to maintain your exemption.
Anyone who purchased a new home after March 1st of 2015:
New property owners must apply directly with New York State by calling 716-457-2036 (toll call) or on their website www.tax.ny.gov/star. You will need social security numbers of owners along with closing date and previous owner’s name.
